THE HISTORY OF ST. VALENTINE’S DAY
Did you know that marriage was forbidden in 270 A.D. Rome? Instead, mates were drawn by lottery and lasted one year. Each year a new lottery took place and a new mate was chosen. Love was forbidden, as Rome could not find soldier’s to fight its bloody wars among the lovelorn. Married men didn’t want to leave their wives and children, so marriage was outlawed by Claudius the Cruel.
But love cannot long be denied. A priest known as St. Valentine married young lovers in secret, in brave defiance of the Roman law. Once discovered, he was thrown in jail where he wrote a note and signed it “From Your Valentine”, becoming the Patron Saint of Lovers everafter. He did not himself meet a happy ending, but his dedication to love, sweethearts, marriage and families lives on forever thru St. Valentine’s Day.
Today, Valentine’s Day is a day for love and lovers, sweethearts and friends, romance and romantics, and is celebrated with hearts, flowers, candy, cards and love notes, Cupid and his arrow, hugs and kisses.
